Dough, A Donut

The word “dough” came up one evening in a conversation that sparked off a series of humorous comments.

As we tried to define the word “dough” in terms of baking, I could not resist by adding that “doe” is also a female deer. I always seem to exasperate people for some reason or other! 😛

“Donut” then came to the fore.

You say doughnut, I say donut – let’s call the whole thing off…

My point being, donuts do not have any nuts or look like one so why is it called a donut? Surely, it should be called a ‘do-ring’ or ‘do-ball’ instead… 😉
